What does Stem Cell and Dentistry have in common?

In May of this years, I had the privilege to serve as a judge the California Dental Association’s student scientific competition. There were some phenomenal studies on dentistry being presented. A winning presentation by a UCLA 4th year dental student stood out in my mind to be the top research. He ingeniously showed how he grew primitive tooth-like structure from stem cells. I was amazed at this study and just to think of the possibilities. Image in about 10-15 years we might be able to implant tooth-buds in jaw bone where teeth are missing and actually grow teeth back. Dentistry surely has come a long way from the days of mercury-amalgam fillings (which is still done here in this country). Even today we are able to mimic tooth structure so much so that even under magnification, it’s difficult to tell ceramic from natural teeth. The future of dentistry is exciting!!
